Successful Staffing Informative Workhop

There are still spaces open for the Successful Staffing workshop to be held at the Carnduff Legion in the afternoon of Thursday, November 24th.

This session will be interactive, informative and focus on the questions that business managers have about employee recruitment and retention. Job advertising, interview questions, conflict resolution, immigrant worker resources and much more will be discussed. Session facilitator, Stacy Brownridge of Hire Yield HR Solutions, has extensive experience in this area and her practical tools and tips will ensure you get the most from this session.

Also in attendance: representatives from Saskatchewan Immigrant Nominee Program (SINP) and the Newcomer Settlement office. They will answer your questions about hiring immigrant workers and their services to help these newcomers settle in southeast Saskatchewan.

This is a great opportunity for businesses in area, as the afternoon workshop will take place right in Carnduff. The Town of Carnduff and RM #2, Community Futures Sunrise, and Can-Sask Career and Employment Services have partnered to bring this event to your community.

Chili Cook-Off at Carnduff Country Christmas - Thursday, November 17, 2011

Have a great recipe for chili? One that curls the toes and makes grown men cry? Well then, get out your spices, hone up on your recipe and be ready for competition because the cook-off is on again! The chili will be judged on presentation as well as aroma and taste. There will be cash prizes again this year for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places. You may represent yourself as an individual or on behalf of your business/organization giving you a promotional opportunity. We encourage all that wish to particpate, to register with Cheryl Ann Shaw at 482.5244 or c.a.shaw@sasktel.net. After being judged, the chili will be for sale at the CE building, St. Andrews United Church at 4:30 p.m.

There will be a baking table and perogies along with Party Lite, Stampin' Up, Arbonne, Avon, Scenstsy, Pampered Chef, Signature Home Products, Epicure, Norwax, various Saskatoon berry products, Alpac socks, sweaters & vests, and Sunset Haven will be there with homemade items, the Oxbow Village Quilters will be selling tickets on a quilt raffle and the Carnduff History books will be for sale and a gentleman will have a table with residential sales info.

Ah! The forgotten joy of a soaring kite...

Come out and join the Carnduff and District Business Organization for an afternoon of kite making and flying.

Saturday, October 1st, we will meet at the CE building St. Andrew's United Church to make our kites and then go to the school and fly them. Hot chocolate and cookies willl be available following the kite flying.

We will have the supplies to build your kites, however if you wish you may bring further supplies to decorate your kite.

This position would involve call-in when the full-time cook is unable to work and also to fill a 12 t0 18 week leave of absence position starting September 26th, 2011. Hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. If you are unable to work a 5-day week, we may be willing to work with you. Applicants for this position must possess reliability, confidentially, positive attitude, and patience. The ability to work as part of a team is also an essential attribute.

The Carnduff Housing Authority is accepting expressions of interest for Contract Management Services. The contractor is responsible for the overall management of the portfolio including the following services:
- Application management;
- Tenant leasing and tenant management;
- Rent collections, including arrears and other charges;
- Income verification and rent calculations;
- Supervising and coordinating caretaking and maintenance services;
- Preparing scopes of work, obtaining quotes for work administrating contracts;
- Preparing payment vouchers;
- Completing inspections;
- Preparing budgets and monitoring financial results;
- Preparing reports and recommendations to the Board of Directors;
- All general administrative duties;
- Attend Board Meetings, Commitee meetings and training sessions.

The contract requires working knowledge and experience in general administration and financial management. The Contractor must have excellent written and verbal skills and be able to work cooperatively with individuals and groups of varying backgrounds. A high degree of discretion and confidentiality is required.

PROVINCE INVESTS $6 MILLION TO INCREASE HOUSING SUPPLY IN SASKATCHEWAN

Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing announced on April 21st the creation of a $6 million Summitt Action fund to help increase housing supply cross the province. This investment will make it possible for stakeholders to come forward and propose creative solutions that are not currently covered by existing housing programs, facilitating innovation in the housing sector.

"The development of the Summit Action Fund further demonstrates that our government is prepared to act on ideas that come from the Housing Summit and provide money to support them," Draude said. "This fund aligns directly with our innovation agenda and supports a secure and properous Saskatchewan, further promoting the Saskatchewan Advantage. Most importantly, it means that more housing will be created to meet the variety of housing needs in Saskatchewan communities."

The Summit Action Fund will provide the government, through Saskatchewan Housing Corporation (SHC), with a tool to drive creative, flexible approaches and innovation in the housing sector. The fund will:

Enable development of housing supply to address increasing demand;

Provide a source of additional support for creative solutions across the housing continuum, from low-income rental developments to homeownership opportunities;

Encourage private sector investments;

Stimulate new innovations in design, financing and partnerships; and

Complement and not duplicate existing programs.

The Town of Carnduff is again pleased to offer "Spring Clean Up Week" from May 2nd to May 7th, 2011 for residents of the Town of Carnduff and R.M. of Mount Pleasant #2. Spring Clean Up Hours - Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. - noon & 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Please note the spring yard clean up does not apply to construction materials/wastes, used tires, oilfield materials, etc. The site will be monitored to ensure materials are placed in proper places.

MINISTER DRAUDE ANNOUNCES AFFORDABLE HOUSING PLAN

Social Services Minister June Draude announced details today (March 28th, 2011) of a five-point action plan to add at least 4,600 new housing units over the next five years and make it easier for Saskatchewan people with modest incomes to purchase new homes. Total investments in housing from these five initiatives over the next five years will be more than $252 million. Market Days will be held at St. Andrew's United Church in the CE building on the following Fridays from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.: May 6th, June 10th, July 8th, August 12th, September 9th, October 14th, November 4th, December 2nd. Market Days are a fundraiser for St. Andrew's United Church. You will find crafts, home baking, vegetables, sewing and home sale items such as Avon, Mary Kay, Epicure spices, Norweck, Watkins, partylite, lines of clothing and much more. They also have yardsale tables where they sale items that have been donated. In the morning they have coffee and a cookie for sale and in the afternoon, you will be able to purchase soup, sandwich and a dessert.

Carnduff Minor Sports will be holding their Spring Meeting and Ball & Soccer Registration on Thursday, March 24th at the Carnduff Arena at 7:00 p.m.

If you have a child that is three years of age or older and is considering playing ball, it is imperative that you attend this meeting. Due to team sizes, if you do not register your child at this meeting, there will be a penalty.

New this year - Soccer! If there is enough interest shown, soccer may be added. You must register your child at the March 24th meeting.

The name shrove comes from the old word shrive which means to confess. At one time it was customary to attend church on the Tuesday before Lent to confess your sins so the season of Lent could be enterd into properly. Some people label this day as Fat Tuesday, no doubt in recognition to the extra calories consumed.

Within the Christian tradition, the season of Lent is a time of prayers and preparation for the celebration of Easter. One of the ways to prepare for Easter was to eat a simple diet; avoiding rich food items, especially fat, butter and eggs. Rather than allow these items to spoil while waiting for Easter, the tradition arose of consuming them before Lent started. The most common method of using these items is in some form of baking. We may be most familiar with pancakes, but some other cultures use doughnuts, sweet rolls or pastries. The celebrations and joy in eating this rich food is in contrast to the days of somber relection which will follow.

The rituals and meanings that surround this day are many and varied even within the same Christian denominations. So: why not attend a Shrove Tuesday pancake supper.

The women of Chile have written the service around the theme "How many loaves have you?" Together, we are asked to respond to what we have and how we can share it with others. In this past year, Chile has been challenged by a devastating earthquake and the collapse of a mine in which many miners were trapped. Again, we are reminded to share our bread and to receive the bread that is shared with us. On March 4, 2011, let us reach out our hands and hearts to touch the lives of sisters and brothers in Chile and around the world.

Congratulations to Meagan Hamilton who was chosen to the Sask First Zone Tryouts in November to represent Zone 1 at the Sask First Tournment in Regina at the end of January. Zone 1 won their three round robin games, which earned them a spot in the 'A' final games. They played Zone 3 and won the Sask First championship with score of 5 - 1 . Meagan contributed to the game with one goal and one assist. Way to go and good luck with your hockey endeavours.

5th Annual Vintage Snowmobile Race

The Old Cruisers Snowmobile Club will once again be sponsoring the Vintage Snowmobile Race on Saturday, January 29, 2011. Start time is 10:00 a.m. and is held 1 mile west of Carnduff. Vintage snowmobiles are pre 1974 single cylinder machine but don't let that fool you, they can go!

Events will include Ladies Powder Puff race, 50 mile race for age 50+ and 100 mile race for HR-HD class. The groomed track is two mile lap.

There will be a concession booth at the track. Award presentation will take place at the Legion at 4:00 p.m.

Construction at Day Estates is continuing to move along rapidly. Work continues to complete the two four-plex units and have them enclosed in order for interior work to continue before the snow flies!

Construction also continues on Broadway for the newest retail addition to downtown! I see the walls went up earlier this week...be sure to take a peek!

Foundation work on the new medical/dental clinic and suite additions at Borderline Housing is also underway.

The Industrial/Commercial Sub Division is also seeing some action with the construction of a new building/shop!

With this cool weather comes the thought of the rinks around the country opening up for the season. Volunteers have been busy getting the ice ready and the facility here ready for another busy year.

The Centennial Arena is once again offering some camps throughout the months of October including:
Conditioning & Skills Camp which includes 8/1.5 hr sessions for the Atom, Pee Wee, Bantam and Midget ages.
Power Skating which includes 8/1hr sessions for the 5, 6, 8 & unders.
Both camps run throughout the month of October at a fee of $50.00. To register, please contact the Recreation Office at 482-3431.

The Town of Carnduff & Rural Municipality of Mount Pleasant No. 2 Economic Development Office in partnership with the Saskatchewan South East Enterprise Region (SSEER) is launching a Business Retention & Expansion (BR&E) Project starting this month. The Town of Carnduff & Rural Municipality of Mount Pleasant No. 2 Economic Development Office is aware that the future sustainability of our community is based upon existing businesses and their success. A BR&E program is designed to identify, communicate with and help meet the needs of local businesses.

The BR&E project involves in-person business meetings with business owners or executives. Their input will help the local economic development organization identify business opportunities, challenges and realities of doing business in the province and immediate area. All individual business information shall be kept in the strictest confidence. Consolidated data collected during the BR&E project will be used to identify/address immediate issues as well as plan future economic development activities.

Specifically, the objectives of the BR&E project are to:

Identify the needs, concerns, and opportunities of existing businesses in order that, where appropriate, local action can be taken to response to the businesses' needs or development opportunities
Learn of the future plans of the area's local businesses with respect to expansion, relocation, an retention and review where assistance can be provided
Access the area's business attitude and develop an effective means of communicating with businesses
Actively engage local stakeholders in economic development

The current opportunities for growth in southeast Saskatchewan are unprecedented. We endeavour to place Carnduff and area in a favourable position to take full advantage of existing and future opportunities. A well orchestrated BR&E project is one of the most effective tools in increasing community capacity and fostering sound economic development initiatives.

Like in previous years the Town of Carnduff will be spraying the elm trees of our town, for the prevention of DUTCH ELM DISEASE.

In this application of the elm trees, the bottom 1/2 metre will be sprayed with dursban turf. The company named DR Tree Service will be doing the work for our town. They will be seen around town with backpack sprayers. If you have any questions or concerns please stop and talk to them or give us a call at the town office at 482-3300.

New Playground for the Daycare

The children at the Carnduff Community Daycare have a new outside toy! The daycare Parental Advisory Committee (PAC) holds fundraisers throughout the year to raise money for items for the daycare and children. The large purchase made this year was this play structure for the playground. The children seem to be enjoying it and are anxious to get outside and play! Other plans for the play area include a garden for the children to plant vegetables as well as some flower gardens, creating a very green play area! If you are out and about feel free to stop by and take a look!

July and August has been busy months for two ball teams in Carnduff.

The Carnduff Southeast Steelers brought home top spot at the Senior Ladies Fastball Provincial Championships in July in Saskatoon. This presented the team to represent Saskatchewan #1 at the Ladies Western Canadian Fastball Championships in Alberta this past weekend. The girls had a great weekend of ball and came home Silver Medallists! Congratulations Ladies Job WELL Done!

The Carnduff Mens Senior Baseball Team, the Carnduff Astros competed in the Senior Mens A2 Provincial Championship in Kindersley the first weekend in August. After great round robin play, leaving the team with a 3-0 record, they went onto play game #1 of the final against the Kenossee Cubs. After 19 innings of play and two rain delays the team came up short losing the game 4-2. With the Astros going undefeated to this point in the tournament Game #2 of the final was required. Game 2 went at the neutral site of Estevan, two days later and saw the Astros clinch the Championship title with a 7-4 win over the Kenosee Cubs. Congratulations Astros it will be a Provincials you will never forget!

Our office was recently requested by a former Carnduff resident to share some information on a specific topic that they will be involved in. They are looking for input from all Saskatchewan residents so feel free to share! Here is the information provided to us:

On September 22, 2010 the Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse (CCSA) and the University of Saskatchewan Research Chair in Substance Abuse will co-host CCSA's inaugural Bill Deeks Lecture, titled, How much is too much? A Conversation for change: Young Adults and Alcohol. The event will be held at the University of Saskatchewan, free of charge to the public and will be webcast nationally.

To get the conversation started, we are asking Saskatchewan residents to share their opinion about drinking among young adults in the province. It will take no more than a few minutes by clicking on: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/shareyouropinion

To help shape the discussion, all responses will be combined and shared with the keynote speaker Andre Picard, a public health reporter with the Globe and Mail, and other panellists from the province.

As you drive around town today you can see people out in about in preparations for the holiday weekend! Today there are excellent sales happening at many of our local merchants...if your in town be sure to check them out!

Tomorrow we will celebrate Canada's Birthday with a number of events taking place in the park!! Rain or shine! Below is a picture of the Town Hall as we Celebrate Canada Day in Carnduff and support our Saskatchewan Roughriders throughout this 100th year anniversary! Happy Canada Everyone and hope to see you at the park tomorrow! (or tonight at the outdoor movie!)

Before we know it we will be flipping the calendar to July 1st. Man oh man where did June go! Carnduff will once again be holding the annual July 1st Canada Day Celebration at Memorial Park. June 30th will see a downtown promotion by many of our local merchants. By checking out the above page you will also see the many specials and sales that will be happening!

Summer is Upon Us

So summer is upon...or so we thought/think! We had a couple of beautiful hot days earlier this week...before all this rain ... yet again! During those days it was great to see lot's of kids enjoying the pool. Swimming Lessons started this past week and many of the school kids have been enjoying the opportunity to swim during school hours!

The parks have been busy with a number of kids out and about and everyone is getting geared up for summer holidays!

The last day of classes at Carnduff Education Complex are June 28th with Report Card Day on June 30th.

Carnduff Graduation is on Monday, June 28th! Congratulations to all 2010 Graduates!

Carnduff Swimming Pool

The sun is shining today and it just about feels like swimming weather! The Carnduff Swimming Pool is hoping to open it's doors this week!
Following is some information regarding the 2010 Swimming Season at the Carnduff Swimming Pool (CSP).

2010 Daily Fees
Pre-Schoolers $2
Student: $4
Adult: $4
Senior: $4
Family: $10

2010 Season Pass Fees
Pre-Schoolers $60
Student: $60
Adult: $80
Senior: $60
Family: $160
Please Note: All season passes must be paid BEFORE entering the pool for the summer. If they are not paid, you will be turned away. Other arrangements can be made by calling Sarah at the pool.

Pool Rental:
$60.00 per hour + $15.00 per hour per guard (Number of guards varied with the amount of people)

Lessons:
Swimming Lessons: June 14-25, July 19-30, August 9-20
Private Lessons: July 12-16
*June lessons take place after school, July & August lessons take place in the mornings
**Please call the pool to register early to be guaranteed a spot. Lesson times are made a week before the start date. All lessons take place Monday - Friday.

Regular Lesson Fees:
Preschool Level's (1/2 hr): $40
Level 1-2 (1/2 hr): $40
Level 3-6 (45 min): $45
Level 7-10 (1hr): $50

Private Lesson Fees:
Preschool Level's (1/2 hr): $50
Level 1-2 (1/2 hr): $50
Level 3-6 (45 min): $55
Level 7-10 (1hr): $60

ALL LESSON FEES are to be paid BEFORE lessons begin. If there are any problems, other arrangements can be made by calling Sarah at the pool.

The swimming pool will be closed June 28th due to a shortage of staff with Carnduff Graduation.

Be sure to stop by the pool to pick up a PUBLIC SWIMMING HOURS note to put on your fridge!

Busy Weekend

If you are in town this weekend, there are a few things happening that you may wish to check out!

Friday
7:00 - Heart & Stroke Big Bike (will be taking off from the corner by Spectra Credit Union and Community Theatre ...... rain or shine!)
8:00 - Doors open to our Street dance featuring "Product of Canada". Location has been moved to the Carnduff Arena due to the poor weather. (Band takes the stage at 9:00).
8:00 - How to Train Your Dragon is playing at the Carnduff Theatre

Saturday
Minor Sports day at the Carnduff Ball Park. All Minor Ball teams will be playing games throughout the day....Great entertainment

Sunday
The Carnduff Swimming Pool Fundraising Committee is planning a day of garbage picking as a fundraiser. Last year they were able to raise over $7000 with this event. Anyone interested is asked to meet at Triple T Homes at 10:00 a.m. Please bring gloves, hats, water, etc. You are also welcome to bring ATV's.

Last week I had the opportunity to take a helicopter ride. What an amazing and unique experience. I was able to capture a couple of pictures of our Town from this view. I can only imagine how beautiful it must be when the fields and trees are all in full bloom and the grass is a vibrant green.

Well this week it finally feels like spring or shall I say summer! With warm temps and the sun shinning you can't help but want to spend some time outdoors! Around town you can see the trees in almost full bloom and hear the lawn mowers out in the evening cutting the grass! What a great time of year!

Giving Back to the Community

The Grade 7 & 8 students at CEC will be doing their part to help the environment while giving back to the community. Tomorrow (Saturday, May 8th) the students will be doing their annual bottle drive around the community. Under the Lions Quest Program, as part of their curriculum the students choose a project that gives back to the community. The bottle drive has become just that event. All proceeds from the drive will be given back to local community organizations or projects.

Energy in Action

Congratulations to Carnduff Education Complex and the 2010 Energy in Action program sponsored by CAPP (Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers). CEC was the only school in Saskatchewan receiving funds under this program. For more information on CAPP and the Energy in Action Program please visit http://www.capp.ca/

Today, May 6th, is the day that the Grade 4 & 5 students, teachers, School Community Council Members, and a number of employees from a variety of oilfield companies joined together to complete the CEC project. Planting of many trees and shrubs around the school yard as well as establishing an outdoor class room where a couple of the goals from today.

Once again, congratulations to CEC and the CAPP program on such a great sustainable and "green" project!

New Clinic & Borderline Housing Suites

As many of you may have noticed over the past couple of weeks, the pods for the new clinic and Borderline Housing Suites have been arriving. There are three large pods left to arrive this week. The three remaining pods are for the addition of the suites, all pods for the health clinic are here! Foundation work for the building is to begin this week.
